Barry Wright (He/Him)

Head of School

Barry has been working in small independent schools in the Seattle area for almost two decades. He founded the fifth grade at The Valley School in Seattle in 1994. He taught and was the head of their upper grades for ten years. In 2004 he became director and successfully led the school for six years. Barry became the Head of School at Perkins in 2010. He was drawn to the school because of its progressive, child-centered philosophy, caring and intimate community, and devoted staff. Barry feels that much of what defines the Perkins experience can be put in the context of inspiration. He strongly believes that when children have had a motivating and exemplary school experience, they are known not only for their academic preparedness but also for their self-confidence and love of school.

Sarah Yonich (She/Her)

Kindergarten Core Teacher

Sarah was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. After getting her B.A. at Pacific Lutheran University in Elementary Education, she has been deeply involved in the educational foundations of young students for over 20 years. Through this journey she has taught in Santa Cruz, CA and spent three years in Italy, instructing a variety of learners in an array of subject matters. Sarah’s passion with teaching lies in her ability to bring love and laughter in the classroom. It’s important to her to connect with the students and build an environment that nurtures a space to welcome the families into the Perkins village. When not in the classroom, Sarah enjoys spending time with her fiancé, playing yard games, laughing with friends and family and finding time to connect with nature.

Emily Furnival (She/Her)

Kindergarten Core Teacher

Emily has always wanted to spend her days exploring and laughing with kids. She’s taught in gardens, forests, city parks, and classrooms, too! Wherever she is, she’s always inspired by the way that kids notice, wonder, and connect with each other and the wider world. She is from New York City but has been on the West Coast for a while and loves the nature she is surrounded by. She has worked in museum education, as an assistant science teacher, and as an outdoor educator for LA County Public School in the mountains above Los Angeles. Most recently, she taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade at a project-based school in San Francisco, where she learned to trust kids’ abilities to safely and successfully climb high trees and use power tools. She is new to the Seattle area, so if you have a recommendation for a hike or a bagel place, please let her know! Emily is excited to join Perkins because of how students and teachers live the big words of bravery, curiosity, empathy, and joy every day. When not at school, Emily enjoys reading, watercoloring, and swimming in new bodies of water.

Larissa Zubair (She/Her)

First Grade Core Teacher

Larissa began working with kids in Perkins’ summer program.  She went on to direct the  Extended Day Program, where her easy connection with children clearly indicated a burgeoning teaching talent. After receiving her teaching endorsement, she accepted the role of first grade teacher, where she has been teaching children to read ever since.  A multi-talented person, when Larissa isn’t making beautiful children’s art displays or creating dynamic social studies curricula, she is cooking meals from her own vegetable garden or taking her family out on their fishing boat.

Megan Frauel (She/Her)

First Grade teacher

Megan hails from the wilds of Montana but has found a love of water and teaching here in Seattle. She has been honing her classroom skills at Perkins for the last few years and is stepping into the role of lead teacher while she pursues her master's degree through the University of Washington. Megan loves the younger grades and finds joy in the curiosity and willingness to be silly found in younger learners. When not power-walking through the halls of Perkins, Megan can be found in her backyard reading or moseying around the Ballard Market with the latest seasonal squash in her bag.


Charlotte Orbach (She/Her)

Second/Third Grade Core Teacher

Charlotte is originally from the Chicagoland area but is relocating from Denver to Seattle and can’t wait to join The Perkins community as a 2/3 teacher. She has experience working with kids in 2nd-4th grade back in Denver public and charter schools. She has also worked as a dance instructor for kids ages 2-18 across the country since she was 16. Prior to teaching, Charlotte worked as a graphic designer in the marketing and technology industry. She’s looking forward to incorporating her background in technology and the arts into the classroom. Outside of teaching, Charlotte enjoys baking dairy- and nut-free treats, hiking, musical theater, reading a book or watching true crime documentaries with a cup of tea, and spending time with her husband and Goldendoodle, Winnie.

Kevin Hong (He/Him)

Second/Third Grade Core Teacher

Kevin is excited to be at Perkins, since he is a fan of small, independent schools. He grew up attending them in Seattle from first through 12th grade. Kevin comes to Perkins after teaching at one in Tacoma for 12 years. He also worked for Camp Fire as a summer camp counselor, camp director, and therefore knows a lot of games and songs. (He will gladly teach you one upon request). Outside of working with young people, Kevin enjoys being outside and taking photographs. A fun fact about Kevin is that his parents met in a bowling league, and as a result, he has spent most of his life as a competitive bowler. His favorite local places include the downtown Central Library, Discovery Park, Roche Harbor, the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, and Skagit County's Samish Island.

Jane Baker (She/Her)

second/Third Grade Core Teacher

A North Carolina born Army brat, Jane began her teaching career quite by accident 17 years ago when, as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Burkina Faso, the village she lived in needed help at their primary school. Since Burkina, she has taught English, Drama, and Science in local schools in South Korea, Morocco, Hungary, and Honduras. Stateside in education, Jane has been Excursion Coordinator at the Champaign Public Library’s after school program in Illinois, an educator and teacher trainer at an environmental education center in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and a volunteer interpreter at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores and the Seattle Aquarium.  Outside of teaching, Jane enjoys napping with her senior pups, converting her son into a Trekkie, getting lost in a good book, and exploring the world.

Rachel Woodgate (She/Her)

Rachel Woodgate starting teaching in 2010 in rural Victoria, Australia. Moving to Siem Reap, Cambodia in 2012, she spent six years working at Jay Pritzker Academy with Cambodian national students. Rachel has experience with students ranging from 1st to 8th grade. She is really excited to be part of the Perkins School community. When she is not teaching, Rachel is running, reading, climbing or sleeping.

Ali Parizer (She/Her)

Ali has been teaching for over twelve years and has experience working with students from preschool through high school, both inside and outside the classroom. Most of Ali’s professional career has been spent as an environmental educator where she was able to teach to one of her passions; helping students find the interconnections between the human and natural world. Ali is very excited to build meaningful curriculum and help foster a creative classroom community. Out of the classroom you can find Ali backpacking through the Pacific Northwest, working in her garden, designing her next sewing project and overall finding ways get outside.

Grant was born and raised right here in Seattle and has worked as an elementary school librarian and a math teacher. He has also worked with in a variety of roles and with a wide range of ages, from preschool to fifth grade, and has taught summer camps about comic books and the solar system. Grant has a deep love of children’s literature and finds immense joy in seeing children grow and develop their curiosity and imagination. When not teaching, Grant loves to play basketball, listen to reggae music and read science fiction novels.


Morrow Woods (She/Her)

Fourth/Fifth Grade Core Teacher

Morrow is a lifelong Seattle resident and is thrilled to join the Perkins School this year! She taught at the Bertschi School as a classroom teacher and extended day teacher, and recently created a summer camp program at Bertschi for second through sixth graders. Before becoming a classroom teacher, Morrow was a museum educator at both the Burke Museum and at the Museum of Flight. As a museum educator, she led programs for elementary students on a variety of topics including flight, astronomy, paleontology, and the history and traditions of Native cultures and tribes of the Northwest. She especially enjoys incorporating her knowledge about these topics into her teaching practice. In her free time, she can be found reading, visiting museums, spending time with friends and family and baking.

Andy Crane (He/Him)

Music Teacher and 2nd/3rd grade assistant

Andy is an active working musician and multi-instrumentalist. His love and passion for music has motivated him to pass this gift on to younger audiences. With a broad musical background, Andy brings a wide variety of educational approaches to engage all students. Andy views his role in the classroom as an opportunity to empower his students with the gift of music, and help them to grow not only as musicians but as individuals. He teaches private and group lessons at the Meter Music School as well as various camps and programs in the Seattle area. Beyond his teaching, Andy plays in a handful of bands that perform around Seattle and all over the country. When not teaching or playing, Andy enjoys art, hiking, bicycling, and a wide variety of other outdoor activities.

Austin Ohm (He/Him)

Art teacher

Austin is a multi-disciplined artist and teacher who leads with his heart and listens to his gut. Austin has been sharing the power art for self-discovery and positive change with students pre-k to senior citizens for over 10 years. Austin and his wife Emily are co-founders of Gridless Studio which promotes health and wellbeing through the creative practices of Art, Yoga, and Gardening. They live in south Seattle with Frida the dog and Sevilla the cat. Austin encourages you to love yourself and have fun!

Hannah Nkeulia (She/Her)

French Teacher

Hannah’s love of French has taken her to many corners of the world and she is thrilled to share that passion with young language learners. Her areas of expertise include French/English translation and Sub-Saharan African literature and her work has been published in Peace Review. As part of her degree, Hannah wrote an ethnography of Cameroonian hair salons, conducted research on women’s literature in Rwanda, translated Haitian legislation on child welfare, and designed a curricular initiative to address the lack of foreign language education in U.S. public schools. When she’s not dreaming up new ideas for her students, her interests include candy making, road tripping, and searching for the perfect picnic spot with her husband.

Mó Mesquita (They /Them)

Science and environmental education teacher

Originally from Cascias, Mó grew up in a multicultural home where they began to develop their deep appreciation for multiple ways of knowing and being. Mó loves to teach inside and outside. Their first two years as an educator were spent serving 4th and 5th graders as a classroom teacher in Edinburgh’s public schools. Mó’s passion for social and environmental justice led them to travel across the world to Seattle, where they have spent the last four years of their career deep in the world of environmental education nurturing relational ways of being in young children and adults. When Mó isn’t learning with and from young people, you can find them lying in sunny patches, staring at the moon and stars while on backpacking trips, and wondering about the world around them.

Cullen Jowell (He/Him)

Physical Education Teacher

Cullen was born and raised in Bothell, attended Inglemoor High School where he played soccer and was King Co champion in 2013. He got his A.A. from Shoreline CC and transferred to the University of Hawai’i Manoa. After spending two years in Honolulu, he did a study abroad in Sevilla, Spain before earning his B.A. in Anthropology in 2017. Cullen has a history of working with children as a camp coach, manager and director for the Seattle Sounders Youth Camps from 2013-2020, coached at Seattle United in 2020 and has worked other various soccer odd jobs. He started his career in education through working in Special Ed as a paraeducator supporting students in their general education classes. He did his student teaching in a combo of kindergarten and SPED while completing his master’s degree. Cullen is ready and excited to start his teaching career here at Perkins!

Suzanne Coleman (She/Her)

Assistant Head of school

Suzanne has been an educator for over 20 years as a classroom teacher, tutor, learning specialist, and teacher collaborator. Working in independent, progressive schools throughout the majority of her education, training, and career, Suzanne feels that Perkins is a perfect fit. Meeting children where they are, in order to support their learning in social, emotional, and academic areas is ideal, and Suzanne feels fortunate to be able to continue her work with The Perkins School and larger community where these principles are practiced. When she is not learning with children, Suzanne enjoys reading, as well as watching her three sons run cross country, play Ultimate, and most recently, play football.

Diane Wright (She/Her)

Assistant Head of School

Diane started her career in education teaching 3rd grade at Chief Leschi Elementary, a Tribal School operated by the Puyallup Tribe of Indians. After moving back to Seattle, Diane discovered the wonderful world of independent schools and taught a combined 2/3 class for three years at Giddens School before transitioning to administration as the Director of Auxiliary Programs. Now, Diane is thrilled to be a part of Perkins, as she was immediately inspired by the school’s mission, passionate teachers, inquisitive learners, and nurturing atmosphere. In her free time, you can find her hiking the trails of the PNW, snuggling with her cat, or attending any sporting event she can scream at.

Emily was drawn to Perkins by the small class sizes and tightly knit community. Passionate about fostering self-awareness and supporting developing social skills, she aspires to help children feel confident in their own abilities while simultaneously encouraging collaboration and compassion. A staunch believer in the power of narrative, Emily believes that when students learn to read and write, the world becomes available. Outside of Perkins, Emily is an avid reader and a casual runner.

Sandra Brown-Potter (She/Her)

Learning Specialist

Originally from Southern California, Sandra came to Seattle over half a lifetime ago and has never looked back. After making a midlife career change from the tech world, she has been teaching in grades K-6 for 15 years, first as a teacher in public schools and as a private tutor, and then to independent school education. She is passionate about math, literacy and technology, and loves the deeply creative, flexible, hands-on culture at Perkins. As a learning specialist, Sandra loves having the opportunity to work with learners of all ages and profiles across the Perkins community. When she is not wearing any of her Perkins hats, Sandra loves spending time with her three recently launched children or tromping up and down steep Seattle hills with her two huskies Skye and Koda.

Angie Gianelli (She/Her)

Admissions Director & Business Manager

Angie has been an auditor and operations manager at a bank for many years. In more recent years she’s enjoyed managing a small business, coordinating math competitions at the middle school level and raising two sons. She’s an enthusiast for historical fiction and history books, particularly in the King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth era, as well as the American frontier.

 

Susan Brahm (She/Her)

Office Manager

Susan began her career as an entrepreneur in a startup travel company and later co-founded two restaurants.  She then moved to a corporate career in business management and development.   More recently, Susan entered the nonprofit sector and joined Perkins because the school’s mission and goals align with her personal values. Susan also enjoys art, traveling to other countries and everything French.

Tunisia's passion for working with children started at a young age. Her career has spanned across many schools throughout Seattle. From tutoring, working as an after school program coordinator and teaching in Pre-K. She enjoys children's innocence, enthusiasm and their curiosity about the world.

Tunisia is also very proud of her Brady Bunch family! She and her husband are loving parents to two middle schoolers. When Tunisia has some free time, she enjoys reading a good book with a cup of tea, creating a cozy home that can never have enough houseplants, and cooking for her family. Tunisia is excited to be a part of the Perkins team and cannot wait to start building relationships with the students!
